Mechanical Engineer — Custom Machines
Hageneering · Torrance, CA · Full-Time · On-Site

About Hageneering
We build custom machines for industries where the stakes are high and off-the-shelf doesn't cut it — theme parks, defense, and aerospace. Since 2013, our small team of expert engineers and technicians has delivered 50+ projects across 10+ countries, from show-action systems for international theme parks to precision test stands for aerospace programs.
We're not a job shop. We're a tight team of engineers who own their work from the first sketch to the last bolt torqued on-site in a foreign country. If that sounds like your kind of job, keep reading.

The Role
We're looking for a well-rounded Mechanical Engineer who can move fluidly between disciplines — controls, machine design, fluids, structural analysis — and between environments: the office, the shop floor, and project sites around the world.
This isn't a narrow role. On any given week you might be designing a machine in SolidWorks, reviewing a fabrication drawing in the shop, writing a controls spec, or commissioning equipment on-site abroad. The ideal candidate thrives in that variety, not just tolerates it.
---
What You'll Do
-
Design custom machines from concept through detailed engineering — mechanical, structural, and controls
-
Develop control system architectures: motion control, pneumatics, PLCs, sensors, and actuators
-
Perform structural analysis to validate designs meet load and safety requirements
-
Collaborate with clients to capture requirements and present engineering solutions
-
Support precision fabrication in our Torrance shop — reviewing parts, guiding assembly, solving build issues hands-on
-
Travel to project sites worldwide to commission, install, and stand up the machines you've helped build
-
Write clear documentation: design reports, assembly procedures, test plans, operating manuals
---
What We're Looking For
Technical skills:
-
Mechanical engineering degree (BS minimum; MS a plus)
-
Strong machine design fundamentals — kinematics, mechanism design, tolerance analysis, GD&T
-
Control systems experience: PLCs, motion controllers, sensor integration, ladder logic or structured text
-
Structural analysis skills — hand calcs and/or FEA (SolidWorks Simulation or equivalent)
-
Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, and drawings
-
Hands-on fabrication experience: comfortable reading weld drawings, working with machinists, using shop tools
-
2–8 years of relevant engineering experience
Personality fit:
-
Extreme Ownership (Jocko Willink)
-
Calm under pressure and fast-changing site conditions
-
Genuinely excited about designing and building machinery
-
Eager to travel and see your work run in the real world
-
Lifelong continuous learner
-
Treats everyone with high level of respect regardless of age, race, religion, education, sexual orientation, political views, etc…
---
The Travel Reality
A meaningful portion of this role — roughly 20–40% — involves international travel for installation and commissioning. We've worked in Abu Dhabi, across Asia, Europe, and beyond. We cover all flights, hotels, and per diem. We won't sugarcoat it: site work is demanding. It's also one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
---
Compensation & Benefits
-
Competitive salary commensurate with experience
-
Health benefits
-
Paid international travel (flights, hotels, per diem)
-
Direct exposure to a wide range of industries and machine types
-
Small team = real ownership and visible impact on every project
